Octane Infinity 45, Coordination Optional 52

Maybe the Octane Infinity was due for an ugly game. At least that seemed to be the case when they faced the Coordination Optional last Monday, July 28, 2008 at The Courts in Beaverton, OR.

The half time score differential was only one point at the half, but despite the 13 steals on the defensive end, the Octane Infinity just couldn’t get it going on the offensive end.

Chris Turman lead the Octane Infinity with 20 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Adam Crane contributed his usual defensive prowess, swiping six steals.

“It left a bad taste in our mouths and the refs didn’t help things any better when tempers were a little short and things were a little rough down low,” said Edwin Tanedo. “Good job everyone of keeping his cool, even though we were probably out of the game mentally due to a number of factors.”

Octane Infinity 76, Hoop Indis 65

It was a mere two weeks ago that the Octane Infinity faced the Hoop Indis in the sauna-like gym of The Hoop in Beaverton, OR. So the Octane Infinity didn’t want a repeat of that game to start the new season as they faced the latest incarnation of the Hoop Indis last Monday, July 21, 2008.

The game remained close throughout the first half despite the tenacious defense by the Octane Infinity, sparked by Adam Crane who picked up five steals for the game. By half time, the Hoop Indis held a four-point advantage. The Hoop Indis followed up with a run at the beginning of the second half, extending their lead to 11.

And then the tide turned. The Octane Infinity didn’t give up. Their defense tightened up, their passing started to click, and they started attacking the basket. One fast break after another combined with great ball movement to the big guys inside and to the shooters outside gave the Octane Infinity the momentum they needed to come back and build a respectable lead to take a decisive victory over the Hoop Indis, 76-65.

Mike R. led the Octane Infinity with 24 points, six rebounds, and five assists. David Camp had a monster game, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbing 13 rebounds. Jonas Reyes added 12 points and two steals while Chris Turman, who didn’t arrive until the second half, still managed to snag nine rebounds, six points, and two blocks.

“A great win all around because it was a great team effort—our rotations were effective, David and Mike were perfect from the charity stripe, our open court pressure created turnovers and our D was solid,” commented Edwin Tanedo. “What a great way to start our season!”

The Octane were without forward John Le, who was coaching a youth basketball camp in Portland.

Octane Infinity 50, Besta 7 57

The Octane Infinity just could not shake off the curse and remained winless at Life Christian School at Beaverton, OR, last Monday, July 14, 2008, as they played Besta 7 for the second time this season.

The Besta 7 controlled the first half with a 14-point lead over the Octane Infinity. On the upside, the Octane Infinity managed to outscore the Besta 7 in the second half, 32-26, but it was not enough to overcome the first-half deficit.

Chris Turman and Mike R. led the Octane Infinity in scoring with 13 points each. Adam Crane played an efficient game, scoring 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

“Wow! Just four attempts at the foul line?” asked John Le incredulously. “Did you get that same young ref at that school who usually refs there and rarely blows his whistle?”

The Octane Infinity were without guard Edwin Tanedo and forward John Le.

The game marks the end of the Summer 1 2008 season. But next Monday starts the Summer 2 2008 season and you’ll be sure to see the Octane Infinity bounce back.

Running in Circles

Edwin, who has a good ear for odd events, mentioned the open track meet. I met up with him, Lisa, and John. I immediately liked the sprawling spectacle, the kids everywhere, teeming, ready to run races, yes, but also just run madly around in the sun.

Edwin and I signed up for the predict-a-mile. Really, this was an event about pacing, about knowing your speed and sticking to it. Competition doesn’t figure in. But my stakes were different: I hadn’t run a timed mile since the 8th Grade. I wanted a “respectable” time: 6-6:15 is pretty fast, 7 is slow. 6:45 seemed about right, a tad on the cautious side.

I wanted to go at a fast clip, yet have a bit left over for the last 200 meters. I found it surprisingly easy to find a comfortable pace, one that was fairly fast yet still allowed me to think and make small adjustments to my speed. The last 100 went well, not quite finishing at a sprint but pretty quick. My time turned out to be 5:56. I was surprised, delighted…

Edwin wanted to do the 800; I was on the fence about it. Though I did run it in middle school, I never had much success. I couldn’t come up with the right formula-fast yet able to finish strong. Too much like a stamina sprint. This event was structured as a race (without kids). My approach, I decided in the minutes beforehand, was to go at a fast pace at the get-go, maybe I could sustain it the full distance.

The first lap was awesome. I found myself midway through the first turn without anyone in front of me. Strange, like being suddenly untethered–weightless and wondering when gravity will reel you in. I felt a bit euphoric. Near the 200 mark was a small boy with a raised palm. With a tinge of self-reproof (shouldn’t I be saving my energy?), I high-fived him.

As the first lap ended, I knew I was in trouble. I heard the time, 1:15, for me a respectable 400 time. All thought was drowned out in the effort to finish the race. Three people passed me in the next 150 meters. After the third one, who looked to be 1/3 of my age, I tried to keep on his pace. I did not fall any further back and finished with a time of 2:38. I gasped for air afterwards, pain and lightness in my lungs-an old feeling, back for a brief while.

Octane Infinity 51, D League Hoop Indis 67

There were two surprises that Octane Infinity encountered at The Hoop in Beaverton, OR, last Monday, July 7, 2008. The first was that the gym was a total sauna. Super hot, no air conditioning. The second surprise was that they were playing a D League team. Perhaps it was Portland Baskteball’s way of curtailing the Octane Infinity’s two-game win streak.

Despite the Hoop Indis’ gigantic center, the Octane Infinity were able to keep up early on. But the Hoop Indis pulled away late in the first half and the Octane Infinity were not able to recover.

“A few missed layups and some threes that just didn’t fall and we would’ve had a much closer score,” recalled Edwin Tanedo.

Mike R. led the team with 18 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Chris Turman contributed his usual double-double performance with 12 points and 19 rebounds, while Edwin Tanedo added 16 points.

The Octane Infinity were without forwards Scott Nelson and John Le, and center David Camp.

Tanedoes it Again

It shouldn’t be a surprise anymore that Edwin Tanedo took home the Crunch belt from the winner-take-all game at Cedar Mill Ballys in Portland, OR, last Saturday, July 5, 2008. John Le was one free throw away from the title, but the ball just refused to cooperate. Tanedo then took over and sealed the game by making his free throws.
